What is happening now in Umm al-Jimal?: The Interpretive Center

Peace by Pax

Workers of the Umm el Jimal Project hustle in preparation for the Interpretive Center opening in 10-days; archaeology students grab their guffas and trowels to excavate three Byzantine churches before the sun gets too hot; local community workers of a start-up tourism company pass in and out of homes to ready them for homestays.

The Interpretive Center opens in 7-days! On June 15th, this museum and gathering center will welcome both local community members and travelers to visit the ancient site. The Interpretive Center sits in the middle of the ruins, built on top of Umayyad remains replicating early Islamic construction techniques. When constructing this center, it was important to replicate early modern construction techniques while distinguishing them from the ancient ruins.

At the Interpretive Center, there will be a day full of activities. First, the guests will explore the 2,000-year-old ancient archaeological site with a local guide. Then they can venture through the museum and partake in activities like trying the traditional North Jordan stitch or practice the ancient art of mosaic making in the courtyard or get dirty and dig for ‘artifacts’ in the dig area. To top the day off, the guests will watch the sunset over the ruins will enjoying a concert by Karim Said and the ECO in the inscription garden.
