Heritage. Creativity. Cooperation. Livelihood.
The women of Umm al-Jimal are united in their vision for a better future as they hand-carve beautiful artwork out of basalt rock, similar to the rock that serves as the building material in the ruins. Groups, like UN Women, UNESCO, and UNIDO have partnered with these women to improve their livelihood, with the support of PAX. After receiving business development training, women in the Umm al-Jimal community began to work cooperatively to develop a Rock Art product that is unique to the region. The products range from bowls, to animals to jewelry. The cooperative is currently producing its first wholesale order of stone soap dishes, paired with handmade soap produced by another cooperative in Azraq, Jordan.
